How to Get Out of Your Own Way and Live Your Dreams
Have you ever had a dream? Not the kind where you’re asleep and strange people and things seem to flow in and out defying the laws of physics and logic. No, I mean a dream, a visionary goal for your future-self.
Whether you currently have a dream you’re working towards or you’ve got one tucked away for a rainy day, pursuing your dream is one of the most important, empowering, and liberating things you can do in life.
But, like anything worth having, the road isn’t necessarily an easy one and starting can be the hardest part. Figuring out the age-old question of ‘where do I begin’, can be the most daunting task of all.
The good news is that there is an incredibly powerful and simple tool you can use to take the first step. A little ritual called intention setting.
High level, intention setting is akin to planting seeds for what you would like to achieve or manifest in your life. When you set an intention you are subconsciously outlining what you want and affirming that you are capable and worthy of bringing that into your life.
You can think of an intention as the driving force behind making your dreams a reality.
Sounds easy enough, but there are a few tricks to making them really work for you.
The first step is to check in with yourself on a deeper level and ask what it is that you really want.
Not just tangible things like a car or a house or enough money to fly first class – not that there is anything wrong with wanting those things – but the key in aligning yourself with your dreams is to get a deeper understanding of what you truly want and what may be standing in your way.
A great way to dig in is to get out a journal and free write. Write down all of the things you would like to have or achieve and follow that by writing down the reasons why you think they haven’t happened yet. It is in the latter part of this exercise that you can really get a clear idea of what is holding you back.
Uncovering your own internal obstacles is one of the most powerful steps you can take in getting out of your own way, and confidently moving forward in the direction of your dreams.
Once you’ve identified your subconscious roadblocks, spend some time in meditation or even quiet contemplation (if you’re not one for meditation), and consciously choose to release them. One of the most effective ways to release these obstacles is through affirmations.
Using an affirmation that acknowledges releasing the blockage and inviting the thing you want to attract in, is one of the best ways to activate your intention. For example, if you’re wanting to ask for a promotion at work, but keep putting it off because you’re coming up against imposter syndrome, you could try an affirmation like:
“I release all fear and doubt, and accept that I am worthy and capable of excelling in my career”
“I release all doubt, and am excelling in my career”
Your affirmation will act like your own personal lighthouse. Whenever you’re feeling off or lost or hopeless, take a step back, close your eyes, and repeat your affirmation as many times as you feel necessary.
You can also incorporate your affirmation into your morning and nighttime routines to really cement the empowering message into your consciousness.
Once you’re aligned with your intention, aware of your internal obstacles, and equipped with your affirmation, you’re ready to hit the ground running in the direction of your dreams.
Well, perhaps, it’s less like hitting the ground running and a bit more like starting your trek up a steep mountain. Regardless of how you look at it, you’ve taken that leap, that first step, and that is something to be proud of.
But it doesn’t end there, does it?
You have to keep showing up every day, facing each of the challenges that come your way head on, and allowing yourself to take the breaks and rest you need along your way.
The truth is, the key to making your dreams a reality is staying committed to the journey, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer. What it means is being your own advocate, being compassionate with yourself, and staying connected to your intention.
“Intentions are the starting point of every dream—the seed of creation,” said Deepak Chopra,“Like real seeds, intentions can’t grow if you hold on to them. Only when you release your intentions into the fertile depths of your consciousness can they grow and flourish.”
A big part of setting intentions is letting them go. I know it sounds contradictory, but letting go and allowing your path to unfold without restraint is part of the process. It allows you to stay connected to your heart’s desire while staying connected to your intuition and allowing yourself to rest, reset, and pivot if necessary.
So, how do you set intentions, but stay flexible with them?
- Start by setting your overarching intention, outlining the big thing you want to achieve. Write it down, meditate on it, then let it go. Trust that by planting it in your subconscious mind you are aligning yourself with the ideal path forward.
- Next, break it down into more palatable steps by creating one or more intentions for the month, week, and even each day. These micro intentions can provide a form of roadmap by aligning you with tangible targets, while getting you used to releasing expectations or attachments to specific outcomes.
- On that note, the most important part of this exercise is getting comfortable with your intentions not panning out exactly as you want them to. A great way to practice this is to set your intention (either on paper or in your mind) and follow it with the commitment to surrender it to the highest good.
For example, perhaps you state your intention out loud, you can follow your intention with the mantra “I release this intention to the abundant flow of the universe, so that this or something even greater will manifest for the highest good of all involved.”
You can rework that mantra to fit with your own religious or spiritual beliefs, but the idea is to plant the seeds for your intention and then let them go and trust that whatever unfolds is part of the process.
Before you know it you’ll be in the dance of setting intentions, letting them go, and watching the magic unfold.
This doesn’t mean it’s all rainbows and butterflies, it takes a lot of mental resilience, patience, compassion, and self-love. It can be an extremely trying journey, and there will be moments when you feel like a failure and want to give up – it’s par for the course.
