How to get truly radiant skin from the inside out

There is nothing like stepping out of the house with minimal or no make-up and feeling truly radiant. Not possible you say? Well, we beg to differ, and by the end of this article you will have a proven method to do just that. We want to look at four proven steps that will create the type of glow that doesn’t come from a bottle, and won’t wash off at night.
There are a number of factors that play into your skin’s radiance: hydration, sleep, diet, and environment, to name a few. Oh, and one little itty bitty other thing; self-esteem. Before we take a look at what to add into your daily skincare routine, let’s work our way from the inside out, and dive into those foundational factors to explore a few quick tips to set your skin up for success.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Contrary to what celebrities say, drinking gallons of water alone won’t directly equate to amazingly youthful, glowy skin. However, some research shows that drinking adequate amounts of water will help blood flow to your skin. Being hydrated can also play a role in the appearance of your skin, giving it a fuller and smoother look. Additionally, adequate hydration helps to detox your body by flushing out toxins and fighting inflammation.
Drink water (not soda, juice, or any other sugar or caffeine filled beverage) when you are thirsty – that’s really all it should take. Your body takes in much of the hydration it requires through the food you eat, so make sure you are also getting your share of fruits, vegetables, and other water rich foods.
Get your beauty sleep
Whether you’ve read our previous articles about how lack of sleep depletes your skin’s collagen production or not, you’ve probably witnessed first hand the damaging effects poor sleep has on your skin. Sleep deprivation leads to increased inflammation and weakens your immune system, which is directly linked to your epidermis (have you ever noticed that when you’re sick, you tend to break out? There’s a reason for that). Inadequate sleep shows up on your face from dark circles, to puffy eyes, to exaggerated wrinkles, and it robs your skin of its radiance, so step two: make sleep a priority!
Create a consistent bed-time routine to allow your body and mind to unwind before turning out the lights. Oh, and speaking of lights, turn off your screens and dim your lights at least 60 minutes before you plan to go to bed. This will signal your body to start producing the sleep inducing hormone, melatonin, and will allow your mind to unwind without all of the extra, unneeded stimulus. In this hour, try meditation, journalling, reading, light stretching, or even a bath to unwind.
You are what you eat
One of the worst things for your skin is inflammation. The most likely way you are spoon-feeding (pun intended) yourself inflammation is through your diet. There are some obvious triggers, such as sugary or processed foods, but there are also other foods that could be causing inflammation that may surprise you, such as vegetable oil, red meat, and agave syrup. Despite its reputation as a healthy alternative to table sugar, it is still extremely high in fructose.
Look for foods and drinks that are high in antioxidants that help fight inflammation such as blueberries, pecans, and green tea, and avoid foods and drinks with added sugars or sweeteners whenever possible.
You are a product of your environment
Pollution alone affects everything from your internal organs to the surface of your skin, and UV rays create free radicals which wreak havoc on your skin. You may not have complete control over your environment; maybe you live in a busy metropolitan city where pollution is an issue or maybe you work outside and don’t have control over your exposure to UV rays. STEP ONE: Supplement

STEP TWO: Double cleanse

This first step is done with an oil based cleanser, and the second cleanse should be done with a water based cleanser which goes deeper into your epidermis to cleanse your pores and remove any lingering impurities.
STEP THREE: Exfoliate
If you really want glowing, radiant skin this easy to incorporate step is one you definitely should not skip. Over time, your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells, but your skin may not always effectively shed all of those cells – which leads to dry, flaky skin and clogged pores. Exfoliating speeds up this shedding process, and actively removes the dead skin cells, leaving your skin noticeably radiant.
Depending on your skin type and personal preference, there is an ideal exfoliator for you. But remember, as with many great things, less is more and exfoliating every day may not be right for you. Once to twice a week should be more than enough to maintain that radiance without causing damage.
STEP FOUR: SPF
It goes without saying that prolonged exposure to sunlight causes severe damage to your skin, and though it may feel like that sun-kissed glow is worth the risk – trust us, it’s not. UV rays deplete collagen production, increase the speed of skin aging, and can cause skin cancer, so rather than taking the risk, be diligent about applying your sunscreen.
