When it comes to supplements, the first question you might ask yourself is: what is the point of supplements, can’t I get everything from my diet alone?
The simple answer is yes, it is possible to get everything you need from your diet alone. In fact, most experts agree that the optimal source of most of your nutrients comes from a healthy, diverse diet of whole foods.
This isn’t to say there aren’t vitamins and minerals almost anyone can use a bit more of such as Vitamin D (especially if you live in a seasonal climate where daylight hours fluctuate), Magnesium or Vitamin B12 (hello all you vegans).
There are also situations when topping up on specific vitamins and minerals makes sense, but finding the optimal sources and (safe!) doses for your specific needs is no simple task.
So, all in all, the answer to the question of whether you can get most of what a multivitamin offers from your diet is: yes.
That is precisely why we didn’t create a multivitamin.

Not all supplements are created equal
First off, supplements have gotten a bad rap over the years due to some shady players and gimmicky products with weird and questionable fillers. So, let’s start by saying, if the product isn’t third-party lab tested or manufactured at a GMP facility – run.
Next, if the products contain non-plant-based ingredients that you can’t pronounce, walk away.
We’re not talking about the latin names for different plants, like Haematococcus Pluvialis – which is a type of microalgae that contains high concentrations of astaxanthin, and happens to be one of the coolest (yes, plant-based) ingredients in Ultimate AM.
What we’re talking about are ingredients like Titanium Dioxide, Talc, or Polydextrose, and if you see those – do yourself (and your microbiome) a favor and abandon cart.
Finally, there is the topic of effective dosages.
Effective dosages are not something to guess at. Too much of certain ingredients could be unsafe, while too little of any ingredient just means you will be paying for snake oil.
The scary thing is there are big companies out there selling seemingly great supplements that don’t contain the minimum effective dosages of their ingredients – and their big budgets and great marketing mean that you will likely never know.
A quick way to protect yourself from many of those types of useless products (and this goes beyond supplements) is to avoid products that contain proprietary or trademarked blends, and avoid any products that don’t readily share the individual doses of each ingredient.
Trademarked blends aren’t always bad, but it does mean that you can never be sure how much of each ingredient in the blend is actually present in the product.
One additional thing to bear in mind is that more isn’t necessarily better.
Some ingredients, like astaxanthin and resveratrol, don’t require massive quantities to be effective. Your body can only process so much of each nutrient, and like we said before, anything extra just becomes waste. Not only that, but some ingredients might actually be harmful if you have too much.

Finally, it had to be microbiome friendly. It had to support optimal digestion function, while promoting healthy intestinal flora and modulating microbiome function.
