Four Steps to Develop Awareness and Improve Your Overall Lifestyle
In alignment with STUNN’s Total Transformation Challenge, we will be exploring ten pivotal themes in achieving Total Transformation in every aspect of your life. If you would like to participate in our challenges join our group on Facebook, or follow the challenge links provided in each post. This month’s theme is: AWARENESS.
Broadly speaking, awareness is the state of being conscious. To be aware is to connect with yourself and the world around you, leading to a deeper understanding about how you exist in the world.
Gaining awareness is the first step in making any change in your life. Whether it’s pursuing a new job or a new love, striving to become healthier or happier, or aiming to make a full blown radical shift in all aspects of your life, that change starts with an awareness that you need a change.
Belsebuub, the author of a number of award winning and bestselling books on self-discovery, and consciousness, sums up awareness beautifully:
“Awareness is not an idea about awareness, as it is not thought at all. Awareness allows you to feel life as it’s happening.”
So how do you go about “feeling life as it’s happening”? You need to develop a muscle for it. We’ve identified four steps to aid in developing the awareness muscle, kickstarting your transformation journey.
Step ONE: Developing Internal Awareness through Meditation
The first step in awareness is to become aware of what is going on inside by taking stock of where you’re at and how you’re feeling. Meditation is the best way to sift through all of that chaos and clutter taking up space inside your mind, and listen to what is really going on. Taking even five minutes to commit to sitting in stillness and focusing on your breath can make a huge impact.
Step TWO: Developing Present Awareness through Journaling
Now that you’ve taken the time to look within, the next step is sussing out what you’ve uncovered. Journaling allows you to take stock of whatever thoughts and emotions have surfaced through your day. It gives you a chance to start working through blockages and clear out any negativity that may be keeping you from thriving.
Step THREE: Discovering Self Awareness Through Self-talk
This is a big one. How often do you find yourself saying how exhausted, disappointed, or frustrated you’re feeling? What about the inner dialogue that comes up when you’re feeling unattractive, embarrassed, ashamed, or like a failure? It’s crushing. In those few moments of negative self-talk, we are doing serious damage to ourselves. Putting in the work to reduce negative self-talk will have a profound effect on not only your mental wellbeing, but, believe it or not, on your appearance as well.
Step FOUR: Finding External Awareness Through Releasing Judgement
Either consciously or subconsciously, we make judgements all day, every day. Judgement is a crucial tool we have developed to help us compare, contrast, and determine what we like. That said, there is a difference between deciding if you like the taste of a new flavor of tea and negatively judging your co-worker’s lifestyle choices.
As Oscar Wilde said, ‘be yourself, everyone else is taken’. Think of that when you find yourself making a negative judgement towards someone for how they put an outfit together, and remind yourself that you are enough when you find yourself comparing your life to that of someone on a seemingly endless holiday. Acknowledge that judgement is instinctual, but be aware enough to let the negative thoughts go.
Awareness is crucial and profound, and challenging yourself to work through these four practices will be a huge step forward. That said, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Transformation takes work and it takes time. In life, we tend to want to race to the finish line, always on the hunt for the cheapest, easiest, and quickest solutions. The problem with that is there are no shortcuts. There are no magic elixirs or secret potions that will suddenly transform us into the person we wish to be.
That doesn’t mean it has to be a horrible grind the whole way. What it does mean is you need to commit, to continue to show up every day, and be aware while you’re learning and growing. So, when you reach that goal – whatever it may be – all those lessons, insights, and experiences stick.
Much like starting your STUNN AM+PM routine, you need to commit to your transformation. You may start to see changes early on, but the real transformation comes from taking a whole-approach, from the inside out and back again, and all of that starts with awareness.
