Four Empowering Tools to Cultivate Confidence Now

Over the last three months, we’ve analyzed how awareness, commitment, and strength factor into your personal transformation journey, and have shared simple tools to aid in cultivating more of each theme in your life. This month, we are diving into the fourth theme of the ten themes of transformation: confidence.

Confidence is built over time, and is shaped and warped and strengthened as you go through life. Your own unique upbringing, personality, and personal history play a major role in your confidence, and due to those unique circumstances, some areas will be weaker and more vulnerable than others.

Perhaps you were told that you were beautiful as a child, so your confidence in your appearance is strong, but your confidence in your physical capabilities may be weaker. Maybe you were told you were stupid growing up, so you have low confidence in your intelligence, so you made up for it in your work ethic.

No matter which way you look at it, confidence plays a part in almost every aspect of your life. It is one of the key factors in determining who you are, how you express yourself, and how you interact with the world. If you want to make lasting changes in your life, addressing the areas where your confidence is weaker and committing to working on transforming those weaknesses will make a profound difference in not only how others perceive you, but – most importantly – how you see yourself.

Cultivating real confidence is the most effective way to make an impact in all areas of your life. You may not be able to control every finite detail of your experience in this life, but as the actor Richard Kline once said:

“Confidence is preparation, everything else is beyond your control.”

Now, that we understand the gravity of this theme, let’s look at four empowering daily tools you can use to cultivate confidence within yourself now.

1. AFFIRMATIONS – Confidence Through Self-Talk

We have explored affirmations in previous themes, but when it comes to shifting your perspective and developing new empowering beliefs about yourself, affirmations are one of the most powerful tools out there. 

Once you’ve identified the area of your life you would like to gain more confidence in, create a simple, yet powerful statement that feels authentic and empowering, then commit to repeating it every single morning.

2. SELF-LOVE LETTERS – Confidence Through Self-Love

We are the masters of our own destiny, and the beliefs we hold about ourselves can dictate what our future holds. By carving five to ten minutes out at the end of each day to write a love letter to yourself, you will strengthen your self-esteem and plant the seeds of confidence for the day ahead. 

You can use this form of journaling to build up more vulnerable areas in your life, solidify things that you have been working on, or strengthen areas you’re losing sight of. No matter how you use your self-love letters, it’s important to take them seriously and allow yourself to feel moved by your own words.

3. POWER POSES – Confidence Through Physicality

Just as our body language is dictated by our mood, how you hold yourself can also have a direct effect on your mental state. You can emphasize this concept through power poses; standing with your feet firmly planted on the ground, your shoulders back and chest proud with your hands on your hips, you will feel mentally prepared to take on whatever comes your way. 

No matter what the day ahead has in store, taking a few minutes every morning to practice a power pose will cultivate physical confidence within yourself.

4. VISUALIZATION – Confidence Through Psychology

One of the biggest hang-ups when it comes to poor self-esteem is not being able to see yourself in a particular light. Maybe you feel as though you will never find love, or never reach success, or never be able to speak in public simply because you haven’t experienced it yet. The truth is, just because you haven’t experienced it physically doesn’t mean you can’t experience it mentally. 

This is where visualization comes in. It can be thought of as a form of meditation, and by taking the time to close your eyes and visualize yourself in the specific circumstance you’re hoping to manifest in your life, you are able to cultivate that experience energetically. When you open yourself up to this experience through visualization, you are providing yourself with the seeds of confidence that will empower you to reach those goals over time.

Confidence is not something that is easily developed. It takes time and commitment and kindness. It takes consistently pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, showing up every day to remind yourself of who you are becoming, and then giving yourself the time to work through the challenges that arise. 

Transformation isn’t a cake-walk, but the hardships are worth the benefits. As they say, it really is about the journey, not the destination. So be kind to yourself, keep your eyes on your own paper, and don’t forget to celebrate the little wins every day.
