CONFIDENCE Challenge: Week TWO
Your beliefs about yourself shape who you are and how others perceive you, whether it’s true or not. The words you use to describe yourself and the thoughts you hold about yourself impact how you interact with the world. If you believe you’re good at something, you step up to the plate without fear. Vice versa, if you believe you’re not adequate for a task, you will often fall short.
Other people’s opinions and judgements can also make an impact on how you see yourself and how you present yourself in various circumstances. If someone tells you they don’t think you’ll succeed at what you’re doing, that unsolicited opinion can put a dent in your confidence. Even your assumption of what other people may be thinking about you can affect your confidence.
The good news is you can course correct by committing to rewriting those negative and disempowering beliefs with confidence boosting ones through self-love letters
As a creative form of journaling, self-love letters are a practice that can radically shift your self-perspective. By taking the time to write a love letter to yourself outlining all of your strengths, accomplishments, and areas you’re proudly working on, you can not only build up your confidence, but you can shift how you exist in the world.
By showing up every day and empowering yourself with loving words like “I am so beautiful, talented, and hard working”, or “you are so radiant, productive, and strong – I am so proud to be you!”, you are taking conscious strides in cultivating powerful and lasting confidence.
Time Commitment: 5-10 minutes
Though the ideal time commitment is 5-10 minutes, the time you take is completely in your hands, and can be made to fit any schedule. Whether you take it one sentence at a time or write several pages outlining how marvellous you are, the key is to be consistent.
After a day of existing in the outside world, being assailed with thoughts, assumptions, and judgements, taking the time to nourish your confidence is crucial. Additionally, ending the day on an empowering and loving note will play a role in shaping how the next day will unfold.
Choose a time slot in your evening routine that feels best for this type of exercise, then open your journal or laptop and start writing yourself a love letter. If it’s easier, you can start by imagining you’re writing it about someone else who you love. Make sure to address the areas you currently feel confidence in, and then highlight the areas you’re working on. Feel free to be as creative as you like, and make sure what you’re writing resonates and feels authentic to you.
- Set aside 5-10 minutes with your journal or laptop.
- Write a first or third person love letter to yourself. Make sure you are outlining both the parts of yourself you’re confident in and the areas you’re working to strengthen. For example, if you’re working on building confidence in your ability at your job, try writing something like ‘I am getting better at ____ every day, and I am so proud of myself.”
- Take as much time as you need, and make sure what you’re writing feels empowering and authentic.
