CONFIDENCE Challenge: Week Four

Visualization

Experience is one of the most effective ways to gain confidence, but what about the times when you need confidence in order to have an experience? When you find yourself in the vicious cycle where your need for confidence ends up depleting the confidence you do have, visualization is your life raft.

If you’re looking to succeed in a new career and you’re feeling completely under qualified, or if you’re looking for a loving relationship, but feel like it will never happen, because you may have never experienced it before, it’s crucial that you build up your confidence in order to achieve your goals.

So much of what you do in your life is dictated by your mind-set. So, if you believe you can do something, you can. The exercise of visualization helps build that mental confidence up, and allows that necessary physical confidence to follow.

The Challenge:

Visualization has been used by professional athletes, public speakers, and artists for years. The idea behind it is that if you’re able to deeply cultivate the energy of a specific experience mentally, the physical experience will naturally follow. The psychological experience provides the seeds of confidence necessary to succeed in the physical experience.

No matter what you’re looking to gain confidence in, whether it be your ability to excel in your job, get in front of a crowd and deliver a speech, find a mate, or do something that scares you, you can use visualization to develop the confidence to get there. 

Set aside time at the end of your day to go deep and visualize yourself in the specific circumstances in as much detail as possible. Allowing yourself to authentically feel the emotions that rise; excitement, joy, pride, elation, etc. as intensely as possible is key. That energy is what allows you the shift necessary to cultivate genuine confidence and reach your goals.

 

Time Commitment: 10-20 minutes

As with most exercises, the time commitment is up to your discretion. That said, it is very important that you take the time to fully immerse yourself in the visualization.

 

When: PM

The time before you go to bed is ideal for visualization. Once you’ve released the weight of the day, you are ready to enter the calm and creative headspace necessary for visualization. Additionally, the energy that you’re left with at the end of the exercise will flourish while you sleep and linger into the next day.

How:

Find a quiet and comfortable place to sit or lie down, then commit 10-20 minutes to the exercise. Close your eyes and visualize yourself in the situation in as much detail as you can moving through each moment. Make sure you allow yourself to truly feel the exciting emotions that come up. Let those feelings fill you up, and take as much time as you need, then open your eyes and carry on with your day.

  • Set aside 10-20 minutes 
  • Sit or lie comfortably in a quiet space
  • Visualize yourself having the experience, in as much visual and emotional detail as possible. Allow the emotions that arise to fill you.
  • Take the time to visualize the experience in totality.
  • Open your eyes and carry on with the day.

It is important to only focus on one goal at a time and remain consistent and flexible in your visualizations. Stick to it and enjoy the process!
