CONFIDENCE Challenge: Week ONE

CONFIDENCE Challenge: Week ONE

Affirmations

Your inner dialogue is a critical determinant of who you are as an individual. Over the course of an hour, we all have hundreds of thoughts pass through our consciousness. Some mundane, others notable. For this challenge, we are shining the spotlight on the thoughts you have when you feel a lack of self-confidence, and are aiming to flip those thoughts on their head through positive affirmations.

An affirmation is a short statement that you can use to solidify a belief. You don’t necessarily need to believe in the statement, but it shouldn’t feel too far fetched or like you are outright lying to yourself. The idea is that through the repeated use of the statement, you will eventually start believing it.

Affirmations can be an effective tool because words carry weight; they have the ability to shift our perspective, actions, and beliefs. Self-confidence is largely built off of the words we use to describe ourselves, and the affirmations we use, either consciously or subconsciously, shape the degree of confidence we have in ourselves.

The Challenge:

This week’s challenge involves developing an awareness around the areas in your life that you lack confidence, and then flipping those areas on their head by creating a statement of affirmation that you can use to shift your mindset and develop real confidence. Affirmations are built on the premise that words have power. If you tell yourself you are confident, over time you will become confident.

It is unrealistic to think that using positive, confidence building affirmations will make you more confident immediately. You will still have those subconscious thoughts arise telling you that you are not good enough before you are even aware it is happening. However, continued practice of positive affirmations will create a habit out of empowering self-talk, which will allow you to become aware of those negative thoughts before they take control of your emotions.

Time Commitment: 5 minutes

Crafting the affirmations may take longer than 5 minutes, but the daily practice itself shouldn’t take longer than 5 minutes.

When: AM

The ideal time to say your statement of affirmation is when your mind is calm and open to different possibilities. For best results, say your affirmations immediately following your morning meditation.

How:

There are three steps in this challenge. Steps 1 and 2 may take a bit more time and effort, but persevere through these, and step 3 will be a breeze – and will have a lifelong impact.

Step 1:

Create a list of the areas in your life you would like to gain more confidence in. Once you have developed your list, pick out one statement that if you feel is the most important.

Step 2:

Turn your confidence shortcoming on its head and make it into a statement that exudes confidence. Don’t hold back here. Even if you don’t fully believe it, it is important that you really embody confidence in this statement energetically.

If your low confidence statement is “I am afraid of public speaking”, turn it into something like “I am an amazing public speaker”, or “I love public speaking”, or “I am becoming a better public speaker every day”.

Your specific statement, and the positive reflection of it, will be unique to your own circumstance, so don’t try to stick to any specific formula. The one thing to keep in mind is to avoid the use of disempowering words in your positive affirmation. Our minds have a way of latching onto the negative word, and ignoring all of the positive that may also be wrapped up in the statement.

From the example above, you will want to avoid “I am not afraid of public speaking”. Your mind will continue to hear the word “afraid”, and the affirmation will have less of an impact.

Step 3:

The final step is to say this statement daily, and make repeating it a habit. The more you say it the better. For optimal results say this statement out loud in the mirror, so you can see yourself saying the words.
