Commitment Challenge: Week ONE
I Am Power Statements
One of the greatest challenges when it comes to commitment is committing psychologically. For most, taking that first step is harder than the actual follow through. The idea of commitment can be paralyzing, keeping us from acting. When we are tasked with a challenge that pushes us out of our comfort zone we can tend to panic and run. We can build wild stories in our head of all the reasons why we will fail and that fear of failure keeps us from moving forward. The fear convinces us that we are not capable.
Our brains process our thoughts as facts. So, when we tell ourselves that we are not capable of something, that becomes our truth – according to our brains. Now, what if we used that to our advantage? What if we were to tell ourselves the opposite, what if instead of saying ‘no’, or ‘I can’t’, we were to tell ourselves that we can?
Just like when we run a negative statement through our heads, when we state an affirmation our brains take that information in and process it as truth. Empowering yourself with an I am power statement like ‘I am making progress’ or ‘I am capable’ will make a profound impact on your ability to stay committed to your transformation.
The overarching goal of every challenge is to give you the tools to use on a daily basis to support you in reaching your goals and transforming your life. One of the first steps in making lasting changes in your lifestyle is committing to showing up and engaging in the necessary practices everyday. No matter what your goals are, you need to harness and flex your commitment muscle to reach them.
This challenge is designed to mentally prepare you to dive into those commitments before you get a chance to lose heart.
Identify an area of your life that you instinctively know you need to work on, then create your I am power statement. You can use something as simple as; ‘I am committed’ or ‘I am making progress’ or something more specific such as ‘I am getting stronger’ if your goals are strength related. The key is to start with something that feels believable to you. So, rather than saying ‘I am a powerhouse’ you can say, ‘I am becoming a powerhouse’.
Once you have your I am power statement, commit to repeating it three times every morning for the duration of the month. It takes 30 days to create a habit, so use these power statements as an anchor to stick to your commitment.
Time Commitment: 5 minutes or less
The time commitment is up to you. Start by taking as much time as feels right, whether it takes ten seconds or five minutes. You will innately know once your words have made the necessary impact on your mental state that morning.
This challenge was designed to work in a similar fashion to the ‘self talk’ challenge from the Awareness month. If you’ve added self talk into your morning routine, try adding in your I am power statement right before your self talk statements. By stating your affirmation, it not only supports your commitment to your personal transformation, but it boosts your empowering self talk sentences as well.
When you first wake up, your mind is clear of clutter, and it is a good time to connect with yourself. As you become more comfortable with it, you can start meditating before bed, and can even pepper it in throughout the day when the need arises.
The idea is to take advantage of the ‘clean canvas’ of your state of mind first thing in the morning. If meditation is part of your morning routine, you are welcome to practice your commitment affirmation during your meditation. When you first wake up in the morning sit up straight, or stand beside your bed then take in a deep breath. While you breath in, mentally repeat your I am power statement. Repeat this three times every morning.
- Define your personal I am power statement. This can be simple or specific, but it must feel authentic and believable to you.
- Upon waking, sit up or stand beside your bed, take a deep breath in, and mentally state your I am power statement.
- Repeat this at least three times.
Once you’re done you can carry on with the rest of your morning routines, giving them the added boost by starting your day out on an affirming foot.
